junior cycling
July 17, 2009 (Lexington, KY) Racing in front of huge crowds on a tight course in downtown Lexington, KY Hot Tube’s rider Gavin Mannion sprinted to victory in the final stage of the Tour of the Red River Gorge Invitational Twilight criterium.

Mannion made the decisive break containing Hot Tubes teammate Anders Newbury as well as Graham DeWart, Cody Foster, Ryan Eastman and Andrew Meyer. The six pushed the pace ahead of a charging main field. Eventually the break shrunk from six to four, shedding Newbury along the way. Mannion went down in a crash before rejoining the break and sprinting to victory ahead of Cody Foster (South Central Development) and Graham DeWart (Pro Chain / Team Turner).

Yellow Jersey Nathan Brown worked aggressively in the main field winning points sprint after points sprint to keep the Red Sprinters Jersey on Hot Tubes shoulders and off those of rival Jacob Rathe. In addition to winning the overall general classification Brown earned a nomination to represent the U.S. in both the road race and time trial at the Junior Road and Track World Championships later this summer.

Defending Champion Rathe Staves off Hot Tubes Armada, Wins Queen Stage Brown Solidifies Hold on Yellow Jersey

Tour of the Red River Gorge
junior cycling
junior cycling July 17, 2009 (Stanton, KY) After 113 kilometers that saw heroic riding from start to finish, three major climbs, and a handful of spills, Jacob Rathe (Hammer/CMG) out boxed four members of Team Hot Tubes to score a repeat win of this spectacular race through the Red River Gorge. Defending the yellow, white and red jersey, Team Hot Tubes kept Nathan Brown, finishing second on the stage, in the overall lead.

KOM Jersey holder Max Durtshci (Hammer/ CMG) battled valiantly to hold his jersey but wasjunior cycling outgunned and failed to score points on the Final KOM – losing it to Lawson Craddock (Hot Tubes)

junior cyclingThe race started with HPC and Specialized setting a high pace to the first KOM. After the field made it safely through the Nada Tunnel and contested the first KOM sprint a strong breakaway established itself on the descent. Their efforts to get away were assisted by crashes splitting the peloton.

The break of twenty shed all but eight riders as theyjunior cycling approached the final KOM – which was won by Cody Foster (South Central Development) in front of all four Hot Tubes riders. Fending off the repeated attacks from the three Hot Tubes riders, Rathe was forced to take the race into his own hands. Faced with a front derailleur problem, Rathe dropped to his team car with 5km to go where his mechanic manually shifted him back into the big ring. Rathe attacked with only Brown able to follow finishing in a two-up sprint.

Craddock retains his Best Young Riders jersey with a strong 4th place finish

True Blue – Hot Tubes Sweeps the Podium in Stage Two At the Red River Gorge Invitational Hammer /CMG Rider Max Durtschi Takes KOM

tour of the red river gorge
junior cycling
July 14, 2009 (Stanton, KY) After failing to place a single rider in the top three of the morning time trial, Hot Tubes decimated one of the best fields of junior riders ever assembled to race in the US by sweeping this afternoon’s road race podium and laid claim to all but the King of the Mountains Jersey.

The first half of the race saw a flurry of attacks but nothing stuck. There were valiant efforts by Max Durtschi of Hammer / CMG and AJ Meyer of the Hincapie Development Team but their assault missed the target – only striking at those at the back end of the field. The racers only came under real duress at the first King of the Mountain line when the attacks started coming fast and furious. In the rush for the first Sprint Point a group of eight riders established a gap which would never be brought back though additional riders would eventually make it across – swelling to twelve before the fireworks went off at the second King of the Mountain point.

In the end it was two Hot Tubes riders – Anders Newbury from Vermont and Nathan Brown of Tennessee who rode off the front and crossed the line as teammates without ever contesting the sprint. Newbury and Brown were followed by fellow Hot Tubes rider, Ian Boswell, who soloed in ahead of the remaining breakaway to complete the Hot Tubes podium sweep.

Racing resumes Wednesday morning in Winchester, KY as the riders face 22.7km time trial.

Tour of the Red River Gorge
junior cycling

July 14th, 2009 (Irvine, KY) Six riders are crowded atop the GC after Stage One’s opening mile-long time trial at the inaugural Tour of the Red River Gorge (UCI 2.1) Junior Invitational Stage Race. Charlie Avis of northern California leads the General Classification as lone rider to come in under two minutes with a winning time of 01:59:63. Lawson Craddock of the Hot Tubes received the white jersey of the Best Young Category posting the seventh fastest time overall.

The first half of the 1.6km course was uphill and saw riders roaring downhill to the finish at speeds exceeding 30mph. Racing under cloudless skies with no wind National Junior Time Trial Champion Adam Leibovitz (Mid-Atlantic Development / Fuji) came in second with a time of 2:00:74. Jacob Rathe (Hammer/CMG Racing), the winner of Tour of the Red River Gorge Classic in 2008, started last aboard a stock road bike with aero equipment and finished within one hundreths of a second of Leibovitz.

Team Hot Tubes, a juggernaut of junior racing, failed to place a single rider in the top three on the stage. They hovered neared the podium with riders in fourth, fifth and seventh overall.

Racing resumes this afternoon with a challenging 99km road race from Irivine to Stanton, KY. The race features points for King of the Mountain and points competitions.

NZ U19 Track Team head to Switzerland

The NZ U19 Track Cycling Team head to Switzerland tomorrow to do their final preparation before Junior World Champs in Moscow.

It's one of the most promising teams New Zealand has ever sent to Junior Worlds. Many of the team have put in some excellent performances on road and track in their efforts to gain selection and to prepare for the hard racing to come. Sam Webster was outstanding at Youth Olympic Festival riding 10.3 for 200m and backed up with results at Track Nationals. Liz Steel got her first exposure to International Competition at Youth Olympics and found the going tough but used this to step up to an unprecedented clean sweep of U19 titles at Track Nationals as well as Elite Team Sprint Gold and Elite Keirin Bronze. Micheal Vink lowered the New Zealand record for 3000m and has been preparing in France by giving the French roadies a hard time. Josh Atkins was in superb form at both Youth Olympics and Track Nationals. Patrick Bevin is new to track but is learning fast and after wins in Oceania Games Road Race, Australian U19 Champs and Tour of Taranaki is in great form.

The whole team is: Josh Atkins, Patrick Bevin, Wiremu Kaihau, Cameron Karwowski, Ruaraidh McLeod, Ethan Mitchell, Elizabeth Steel, Hamish Tomlinson, Michael Vink, and Sam Webster.
